The staff at our department are some of the most dedicated music teachers and directors in the region. Here are some short biographies of our beloved music teachers at Bayview Secondary School.
Dr. Chesky Neceski
B.Mus, M.Mus, D.Mus.
Head of Department
Dr. Neceski was born in Macedonia and immigrated to Canada at the age of 6. He studied composition at the University of Toronto where he completed his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees. While entering his first-year undergraduate program at the University of Toronto, he was also a teaching assistant for six years in the Ethnomusicology department under Professor James Kippen.
He then studied composition with the renowned composer George Crumb at the University of Pennsylvania from 1993 to 1996 where he completed a second Master of Music degree and a Ph. D. in composition. He also taught at the University of Pennsylvania for 3 years.
He has been an educator since the age of 14 starting his teaching career at the Ontario Conservatory of Music in Kitchener as well as teaching private music students. As a performer, he constantly performs throughout North America. As a composer, his music has been performed throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia.
He is passionate about music and this comes through in everything he does. He has been nominated twice for Excellence of Teaching Awards and his ensembles consistently place amoung the best at festivals and competitions. He has produced numerous students who have gone on to study music performance, composition, and education at the universities.
Dr. Neceski is excited about the musical journey he has commenced with the incredibly talented music students at Bayview Secondary School.
Alison Harwood studied Music Education and Clarinet Performance at Wilfrid Laurier University where she earned her Honours B. Mus. and was an active member of the Laurier Wind Ensemble and the Laurier Music Educators Association. She taught abroad in South Korea before returning to Canada and completing her B. Ed. at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. She taught music at several high schools in York Region before coming to teach at Bayview Secondary School.
Vocal & Piano Teacher
Ms. Fong majored in voice at the University of Toronto where she acquired her B. Mus. She has also completed her ARCTs in piano performance and piano teaching from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Her performance credits include: ensemble and understudy to Lady Thiang at Straford Festival's production of "The King and I", ensemble in Tapesty New Opera's "Iron Road", as well as various guest appearances for Fairchild Television. In addition, she performed as the lead vocalist with the Toronto Chinese pop group, Carry On. She has taught voice, piano and theory privately for several years and completed a B.Ed at York University before coming to teach at Bayview Secondary School.
